In 2018, the sheriff’s office invited Friedmann to join a group of outside advisers on jail reform, and in the months before Friedmann’s arrest Hall had met with him many times. He appreciated Friedmann’s seriousness, and the feeling was mutual. Friedmann lauded Hall in the Tennessean. When he learned of the arrest, Hall said, he “couldn’t believe it.”
